I have been tutoring maths, physics and related subjects for several years, initially informally to my contemporaries, then to undergraduate physics students during my PhD studies, and finally as a private tutor, and can provide tutoring in mathematical and scientific subjects from key stage three upwards, to adults or children. Lessons can be for individuals or small groups (up to 4 students), and are usually conducted at my house in Port Soderick.
I aim to nurture an enquiring spirit in my students, and to help them develop ways of learning which suit them and which they will be able to apply to topics outside those covered in lesson. The purpose of lessons is not to provide answers to problems, but to enable the student to discover those answers for themselves, and in so doing to grow in confidence in their own ability – something which often translates into increased confidence in other areas of life. This is done by encouraging the student to freely ask questions, which they may feel inhibited from doing in a classroom environment, and hence ensuring that the foundations of a subject are firmly in place before building on them in a logical fashion, step by step.
Before your, or your child's, first lesson I offer a free, no-obligation, half-hour consultation, when we can meet and discuss the student's requirements. This allows me to determine whether I will be able to meet your needs, and allows you to ensure that you are comfortable with proceeding with lessons. If you wish to go ahead we can then decide upon a schedule of lessons to cover the subject or subjects you require within any necessary time-frame, e.g. in the run up to an exam.
Relevant experience and qualifications are detailed elsewhere on this web site (see the section About Me), and I am happy to provide my certificates for you to examine. For the safety of both myself and the student I insist that a parent (or other adult, with written permission from a parent) is present in the building when I am tutoring anyone under the age of 16. I also have regular police disclosure security checks, which you are welcome to see.
